Jr. Excellence

Tompkins Tennis would like to congratulate Caroline Doyle, Guiliana Olmos, Natalie Spievack, Emma Critser, and Ming Chen on their results at this months Excellence.

At the Harbor Bay Club in Alameda, Ca.
Caroline Doyle won the girls 14s championship beating 2nd seed Kassidy Jump 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.
Caroline played solid tennis both weekends only dropping one set to the top seed Kennedy Davis in the quarterfinals. In the first two rounds Caroline lost only three games as she beat Naharika Bedekar and Lily Folini 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively. In her quarterfinal match with Davis, Caroline lost an error filled first set 4-6, but in the second set she cut down her unforced errors to grab the set 6-4. In the third Caroline steamed rolled playing smart all around tennis and blanked Kennedy 6-0 in the deciding set. The semifinal match gave Caroline little trouble as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Crystal Yen. Caroline also won the girls 14s double title with Kamile Kecki.

Natalie Spievack played solid tennis both weekends but came up one win short of the girls 12s title losing in the finals to top seed Christi Tan 6-4, 6-2.
Natalie’s first two rounds went rather smooth as she beat Kristy Jorgensen 6-2, 6-2 and Kaede Ishikawa 6-1, 6-1. Natalie’s first test came in the quarterfinals against Saga Shermis needing three sets to beat the 8th seed 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The semifinal was another close affair but Natalie only need two set to beat 4th seed Jessie Lee 7-6, 6-3.

Emma Critser also played well this weekend placing third in the girls 12s. Emma had two great wins over 5th seed Nicole Mitchell 6-1, 6-1 and 4th seed Jessie Lee 6-2, 7-5. Emma rolled in the first three rounds highlighted with the win over Mitchell. Emma would lose to the top seed and eventual winner Christi Tan in the semifinals but would bounce back in the playoff to beat Jessie Lee for third place.

At the Solano Athletic Club in Fairfield Ca.
Guiliana Olmos beat 5th seed Katherine Flanigan 7-5, 6-1 in the finals of the girls 18s championship.
The unseeded Olmos took down three seeds including top seed Kelly Chui 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in the second round and 3rd seed Jamie Pawid 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.
In the boys 18s, Ming Chen bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to 2nd seed Eugene Muchynski to win the consolation draw. The win placed Ming 5th in the tournament.

Fremont Tennis Center Jr. Championships

Tompkins Tennis would like to congratulate Emma Critser on her performance at the Fremont Tennis Center Jr. Championships. Emma swept all the awards winning the girls 12s singles, girls 12s doubles, and received the USTA Norcal Sportsmanship award.
In singles, Emma started her winning ways with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Deepa Dhore. The second round provided a match up with 9th seed Shravya Adusumilli but Emma would have very little difficulty as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win. The quarterfinals matched up Emma with the 5th seed Kalyani Narayan but once again Emma played great tennis as she won 6-1, 6-0. The semifinals also gave Emma little trouble as she beat 12th seed Saga Shermis 6-1, 6-0. The finals did get interesting as Emma took on 3rd seed Jessie Lee. The first was close but Emma was able to take the set in a tie breaker 7-5. The second set was once again a close battle but Emma was able to take the set and the championships 6-3.
In doubles, Emma teamed with fellow Tompkins Tennis star Natalie Spievack. The two played some close matches beating the teams of Jacques and Jacques; Cai and Chong; Bellis and Tsodikova; and finished the tournament with a win over 4th seed Incerpi and Mitchell. Emma and Natalie both received the Norcal Sportsmanship award in the tournament.

Courtside Championships

Courtside Championships

Tompkins Tennis would like to congratulate David Hsu, Katie Le, and Natalie Spievack for their tournament wins at the Courtside Jr. Championships in Los Gatos Ca.

Playing in the girls 18s division, Katie open the tournament with two dominate wins over Chloe Dobbert and Heather Davidson beating each of them 6-1, 6-0. The quarterfinals offered the biggest challenge to Katie as she needed three sets to beat the 1st seed and fellow Tompkins Tennis student Kelly Lamble. The first set went to Lamble 6-3 as she took balls early and moved Katie all around the court. In the second and third sets Katie turned things around hitting her shoots early and moving Kelly around; Katie won the last two sets 6-3, 6-2. Katie turned in her most dominate performance in the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 “golden bagel” win over 3rd seed Chau Truong. The finals went just as smooth for Katie as she beat Janet Liu 6-2, 6-2.

In the boys 14s division, David Hsu played great tennis winning every match in straight sets. David cruised all the through the quarterfinals with wins over Garrett Cook 6-0, 6-0; Henry Shen 6-0, 6-2; Parker Silverman 6-0, 6-1; and Kenneth Toa 6-2, 6-0. David’s more impressive victories came in the semifinals and finals. The semifinals featured a match up with 3rd seed Sean Telmadge in which David won 6-2, 6-3. The finals match up was with the 1st seed Mason Vierra which David prevailed 6-2, 6-3.

The girls 12s division was won by Natalie Spievack. Natalie too did not drop a set as she won 6 matches including wins over 3rd seed and fellow Tompkins Tennis student Emma Critser in the semifinals and 4th seed Jessie Lee in the finals to capture her first Championship title. The first three rounds got Natalie on her roll as she dominated Smita Sabada 6-0, 6-1; Saga Shermis 6-3, 6-1; and Aiswarya Sanker 6-2, 6-1.

NorCal Sectionals

Tompkins Tennis had great results this past week at the Norcal Sectional tournaments held all around Northern California.

At Santa Clara University the boys and girls 18s took place. Ming Chen playing the boys 18s reached the semifinals by defeating 2nd seed Eugene Michynski 6-2, 6-4. Also in the boys 18s Chris Mark placed 5th by winning the consolation finals over 7th seed Sky Lovill 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. On the girls side Zoe De Bruycker dominated the field at took home 1st place. Zoe's highlights include a quarterfinal win over 15th seed Jamie Pawid 6-2, 6-0; a semifinal win over 11th seed Layla Sanders 6-0, 6-4; and in the finals an impressive win over the 4th seed and former number one 16 year old in the nation Ellen Tsay 6-2, 6-1.

The 16s championships where held in Monterey and unseeded Giuliana Olmas would play great tennis to take home first place. Giuliana defeated 3rd seed Janet Liu in the 3rd round, 7th seed Srinihdi Raghaven in the quarterfinals, 1st seed Katya Visilyev semifinals, and finished off the tournament with a win over 2nd seed Blanca Martinez-Cobian in the finals.

The 14s championship were held at the Seascape Club in Aptos. Mariska Chamdani playing through a tough left wrist injury was able to grind out 5th place. Mariska's highlights include wins over 5th seed Giannina Ong 6-4, 6-1; 6th seed Darya Ashim 6-1, 6-0; and 8th seed Emily Gould 7-6, 6-0.

At the Las Palmas tennis club in Sunnyvale the 12s championships took place. On the girls side Christine Eliazo reached the semifinals by beating 5th seed Hadley Berg in a grueling three match. Christine would loss the first set 4-6, but bounce back to win the second 6-0. The third set would be a close 6-4 win for Christine putting her in the semifinals. On the boys side Justin Sun would place 5th by winning the consolation draw. Justin beat fellow Tompkins Tennis student Adrian Chamdani in the consolation finals 6-4, 6-2.


May Nationals

Tompkins Tennis had great results this week as level two national opens took place around the country. Among the top results was 15 year old Samantha Critser who took home 3rd place in the girls 18s in Lakewood, Ca. Samantha came out of the gates strong with a 2nd round win over 7th seed Stephanie Hoffpauir 6-4, 6-3. The round of 16 had Samantha matched up with 9th seed Sabine Fuchs whom she dominated with a 6-1, 6-2 win. In the quarterfinals Samantha would have a showdown with the number one seed and 6th ranked junior in the country Cathrine Isip. The tight battle would included a first set tie breaker that Samantha would dominate winning 7-0 with seven straight winners. The second set, though close, again would go in favor of Samantha 6-4; final line read 7-6, 6-4 and birth in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Samantha’s streak would end in the semifinals losing to Gabrielle De Simone 6-4, 6-3 but Samantha would bounce back win the playoff 6-1, 6-4 against Lacey Smith.

In El Paso, Texas another 15 year old playing up in the 18s was John Lamble, who also took home 3rd place. John’s highlights include a round of 16 win over 9th seed Gregory Andrews 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Though John did loss in the semifinals to the number one seed and 14th ranked junior in the country David Nguyen 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, he would bounce back to win the playoff 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 over Jamin Ball. Also in El Paso, Zoe De Bruycker would have a good result as she reached the consolation finals. Zoe had a good early win over 9th seed Emma Levy 6-3, 6-2 in round of 16. In the quarterfinals Zoe would face 2nd seed Hideko Tachibana and battle for three sets. Zoe would come on strong in the first set winning 6-2, but would loss the next two sets each in a tie breaker. Zoe was able to get two more wins in the consolation draw including a dominating win over 3rd seed Elizabeth Epstein 6-4, 6-0. Elk Grove, Ca would feature two 3rd place finishes by Tompkins Tennis students, Ming Chen in the boys 16s and Giuliana Olmos in the girls 16s. Ming rolled from the start with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the first round, 6-1, 6-0 win in the second round, and a 6-0, 6-2 win in the third round. The quarterfinals had Ming facing 6th seed Eric Johnson, Ming would have a close first set winning 6-4 but cruised in the second set winning 6-0. Ming would loss in the semifinals to Daniel Kosakowski 6-3, 6-3 but recovered to take down 3rd seed Daniel McCall in the playoff 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. In the girls 16s unseeded Giuliana Olmos opened the tournament with a dominating win over 3rd seed Chrissy Uriarte 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Giuliana would keep her great tennis up as she rolled in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ashley Dai. The semifinals would have Giuliana face 2nd seed Lynda Xepoleas and though Giuliana played very well she would fall 6-3, 7-5. That same day Giuliana would get back to her winning ways as she beat 4th seed Katherine Flanigan 6-3, 7-5 in the playoff.

Rio Del Oro Championships - Sacramento, CA

Tompkins Tennis would like to congratulate the following players and results at the Rio Del Oro Championships in Sacramento, California.

Mariska Chamdani playing in the girls 14s went 5-0 to win her third 14s championship. Mariska dominated the tournament winning all her matches in straight sets including a 6-0, 6-2 finals win over 4th seed Paris Williams.

Christine Eliazo played dominating tennis to win her second consecutive girls 12s championship. Chirstine won all four of her matches in straight sets including a finals win over 6th seed Jacqueline Jacques 6-3, 6-3.

Kelly Lamble had a good tournament taking home third place in the girls 18s. Unseeded Kelly took down two seeds including 4th seed Chau Truong 6-3, 6-3. Kelly would lose her semifinal match to first seed Kelly Chui but would bounce back in the playoff to beat Lauren Curry 6-3, 6-3.

Chris Mark played some strong tennis to place third in the boys 18s. Chris rolled through his first three matches in straight set with wins over 12th seed Michael Hiu and 8th seed Max Glenn. Chris would lose his semifinal match to 6th seed Daniel Hoffman but comeback to win the playoff over 4th seed Alexander De Chatellus.

Brian Sun played solid tennis to reach the semifinals in the boys 14s. Brian won his first two matches in straight sets before having a break through win over 3rd seed Justin Chan in three sets. Brian would play another three set match in the semifinals but would fall to 7th seed Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.


Easter Bowl Results

Tompkins Tennis would like to congratulate Samantha Critser and Aeriel Ellis on their results at the Easter Bowl National Championships. The annual Easter Bowl Championships are held in Rancho Mirage and is one of four major junior championships. The Easter Bowl allows only the top 132 players in the country in each age group to participate; the 18s age group is even more competitive as it is an ITF international event and only allows the top 64 entries.

Aeriel, playing the girls 18s international event, played some strong tennis and reached the semifinals of the Easter Bowl Championships. Aeriel won a total of four matches including an impressive 7-5, 7-6 second round win over 16th seed Noel Scott. Aeriel’s tournament started with a first round win over C.C. Sardinha 7-5, 6-4, a second round win over Scott, a 6-4, 6-3 third round win over Cierra Gayton-Leach, topped with a quarterfinal win over Mc Call Jones 6-4, 6-4.

Samantha played some great tennis and reached the quarterfinals in the girls’ 16s. Ms. Critser racked up four wins highlighted with a round of 16 win over 16th seed Whitney Ritchie. Samantha had a first round win over Magen Henegan 6-3, 6-3, a dominating second round win over Mimi Hamling 6-1, 6-1, a tight third round win over Robin Anderson 7-5, 7-6, than topped off the tournament with an overpowering 6-0, 6-2 win against Whitney Ritchie.

Congratulations once again to Sam and Aeriel on some great tennis!


Player Recognition

Tompkins Tennis would like to highlight Brooke Irish and John Lamble for their recent performances. Brooke Irish won the girls 14s National Open in Claremont, California. The Pleasanton native played some dominating tennis winning all her matches in straight sets. Along the way to the top Brooke took down two seeds including 2nd seed Desirae Krawczky in semifinals 6-2, 6-4. In the finals Brooke dominated nor-cal rival Ayaka Okuno 6-3, 6-1 to capture her first National Championship.

Fifteen year old John Lamble showed that his game is well beyond his age by winning his first Men’s Open in Stockton, California. John became the youngest player ever to win the annual Challenge Cup Open, a tournament that has ran for 56 years. Among John’s impressive wins were a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win over 4th seed Xavier Smith in the second round and a finals win over 3rd seed Alex Storm.

Congratulations to both Brooke and John on their historic tournament wins!


Level 2 National Opens

Level 2 National Opens were held this past weekend all over the U.S. and Tompkins Tennis students had some more great results.

In Waco, Texas 15 year old John Lamble won five matches in total reaching the quarterfinals in the main draw and the finals in the consolation draw in the boys 18s. John opened the tournament strong with three wins in straight sets. After a tough loss in the main draw John would bounce back with two more impressive wins over seeded players. John dominated the 12th seed Joe Young 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, than beat up on 16th seed Mark Oljaca 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. John’s run would end with a tough three set match against 5th seed Alexander Sarkissian in the finals losing 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In Honolulu, Hawaii 16 year old Zoe De Bruycker had a great tournament placing 2nd in the girls 18s. Zoe rolled in her first three matches winning each in straight sets. After that things got a little more difficult for the Saratoga native but Zoe would be up to the challenge. In the quarterfinals Zoe faced 5th seed Arianna Colffer, Zoe need three sets but would beat Colffer 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. In the semifinals Zoe faced nor-cal rival and 2nd seed Tayler Davis. The match with Davis was a close battle but Zoe would prevail again in the third set winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Unfortunately Zoe was not able to pull it out a win in the finals losing to 1st seed Catharine Isip.

In Lakewood, California Samantha Critser played some great tennis finishing in 2nd place in both the girls 16s singles and doubles. In the singles draw, Sam won her first two matches in convincing style, unfortunately things got complicated after that. In a string of three straight matches Sam would have to go the distance in all three of them. In the round of sixteen, Sam would need three sets to beat Meagan Heneghan 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals Sam would go the distance again to beat 5th seed Sarah Lee 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the semifinals Sam would take on the 2nd seed Britney Sanders. Sam looked like she would only need two sets this time by winning the first set 6-2, but the second set didn’t go as well and Sam dropped it 4-6. Again Sam saw herself in a third set and once again Sam elevated her game to win the set and the match 7-6 in the third. Sam’s grueling road to finals looked to catch up to her where she would loss to 8th seed Stacy Tan. In doubles, Sam teamed up with Lacey Smith to win three matches before losing to the team of Sanders-Sanders in the finals.

In Claremont, California Brooke Irish reached the finals of the girls 14s but unfortunately unable to finish due to the weather. Brooke steam rolled through the draw into the finals winning five matches all in straight sets. Among her impressive wins come in the quarterfinals were she beat 8th seed Sophia Bott 6-1, 7-5. Brooke would follow one impressive win with an even more impressive win beating 2nd seed Desirae Krawczyk 6-2, 6-4. Brooke will have a chance to finish out the tournament as she will face Ayaka Okuno in the finals at an agreed location in Northern California.


Fresno, Ca. SSRC Junior Excellence

Girls 18s: Both Sam Critser and Katherine Dicconson reached the semifinals. Sam took down the 1st seed Tyler Davis in a great three set match 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. Sam than took down the 6th seed Fidan Manashirova 7-5, 6-3. Katherine also took down a seeded player, beating the 4th seed Layla Sanders with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win.

Girls 16s: Brooke Irish had a great tournament playing in her first 16s Excellence. The 14 year old from Pleasanton had the tough task of taken on the 6th seed Catherine Nguyen in the first round. Brooke was up to the challenge and took the match 6-3, 6-2. Brooke would lose her next match but showed great determination, bouncing back to win the consolation draw. Along the way Brooke would take down two more seeded players, 8th seed Janet Liu 6-1, 6-4 and 5th seed Blanca Martinez-Cobian 6-1, 6-1.In total Brooke won 6 match, three of them over seeded players, and losing only one match.

Girls 14s: Natsuko Takayanagi and Mariska Chamdani had great results placing 4th and 5th respectively. Natsuko open the tournament with an impressive win over the 2nd seed Stacy Yam 6-2, 6-4. Natsuko also had a strong win over the 5th seed Kassidy Jump 6-1, 7-6. Natsuko would loss in the semifinals to the eventual winner Ayaka Okuno in a close three set match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9). Mariska lost a close match in the second round but was able to elevate her game and dominate the consolation draw. Mariska first beat 6th seed Paris Williams 6-3, 7-5 she than dispatched 5th seed Kassidy Jump 7-6, 6-2. In the semifinals Mariska took down the 3rd seed Marina Nikolic 6-3, 7-5 which would allow Mariska a chance at revenge against the player that took her out in the main draw Julie Leong. Mariska dominated the match beating Julie Leong 6-4, 6-1 and winning the consolation draw.

Girls 12s: Christine Eliazo played outstanding tennis and placed 3rd in Fresno. Christine played three tough three set matches in a row winning two of them including a quarterfinal match up against fellow Tompkins Tennis student Natalie Spievack 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Christine would loss in the semifinals to the 3rd seed Isabella Heidenreich again in a three set match 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Christine did bounce back to win the third place match against 5th seed Lily Forlini this time in two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Boys 18s: Allan Shin had some big breakthroughs as a finish 2nd in the Fresno. Allen had a great three set semifinal match beating Spencer Talamadge 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Allen would loss in the finals to the number one player in Nor Cal Thai Tu.

Boys 14s: Maksym Tsvetkov and Brain Sun both had strong tournaments. Though both lost in the main draw both elevated their game to rack up some nice wins. Maks was able to reach the finals of the consulation draw but was unable to play the match due to injury. Along the way Maks defeated the 4th seed Deepak Sabada 6-4, 7-6 and fellow Tompkins Tennis student Brain Sun 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in a super tie breaker to reach the finals. Brian was able to get further in the main draw reaching the quarterfinals. In the consolations Brian beat Kevin Chen in the quarterfinal to set up the semifinal match with Maks.

Boys 12s: Unseeded Justin Sun played solid tennis as he reached the finals of the consolation draw. Justin loss a close three set match in the main draw to 7th seed Deric Wanland 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Justin recovered nicely and racked up four wins in the consolation draw to reach the finals where he would loss a tough match to 6th seed Andrew Low.
